Chagas Disease and Bed Bugs

TORONTO — Penn study “Bed Bugs (Cimex lectularius) as Vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi”

On November 17, 2014, Michael Z. Levy, PhD and his team from the University of Pennsylvania, published a report in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, entitled: “Bed Bugs (Cimex lectularius) as Vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi.”

They have confirmed for the first time; the bi-transmission and spread of the debilitating and potentially deadly Chagas Disease by bed bugs. This makes bed bugs the second greatest vector for transmission of this disease.

Background

The disease was named after Carlos Chagas the Brazilian epidemiologist and physician, who first described the disease in 1909.

Chagas (Sha–gus) Disease – Why Should You Be Concerned?

Chagas Disease is a potentially life–threatening illness caused by the single cell protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma (tra•pano•so•ma) cruzi. Often undetected during the initial phase, 30 to 40% of infected people develop symptoms 10 to 30 years after the initial infection. The symptoms are progressive, irreversible and can be debilitating and life threatening. This is the highest impact infectious disease in Latin America and it is spreading at an alarming rate across the United States.

This rapid and unexpected spread was part of the reason that prompted the group of researchers to look for a missing cause. Something silently, undetected that was perhaps overlooked and they found it.

Implications

Bed bugs can become infected and transmit the Trypanosoma cruzi (T. Cruzi) parasite while blood-feeding on humans and animals, thus silently spreading the parasite from one victim to another. Easily undetected for years, each victim becomes a host, unknowingly spreading the disease to others. After the initial infection, if not treated, the host will be a carrier for life.

  • • No vaccine to prevent
  • • The only two drugs benznidazole and nifurtimox used to kill the parasite, are not FDA approved
  • • Permanent irreversible organ damage
  • • Affecting pulmonary, neurological, intestinal, liver and spleen organs
  • • Can be debilitating and life threatening
  • • Bed bugs can transfer this disease to you and your family
